WHY CHOOSE Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive skin-rejuvenating procedure that uses abrasive micro-crystals to exfoliate the uppermost layer of the skin, revealing younger, smoother, and healthier skin. It is typically recommended to those who wish to improve their sun-damaged skin, enlarged pores, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, acne, and scarring.
Summary
How does it work?
The goal of the treatment is to revitalise or rejuvenate the skin. The microdermabrasion at home and at skin clinics have the same principle: when the outermost layer of the skin called the stratum corneum is removed, your body’s wound repair system interprets that as a mild injury and immediately begins to replace the old skin with new and healthier cells.
However, microdermabrasion should only be performed by dermatologists or skin specialists to ensure your safety and the efficacy of the procedure. At-home microdermabrasion kits do not provide the same results as a professional treatment and may lead to scarring and other complications.
What are the benefits of microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is often regarded as a “skin polishing” procedure. Similar to peeling treatments, it sloughs off old and blemished skin cells to reveal a smoother and more revitalised skin. It is effective and safe for a variety of skin problems such as superficial acne scars, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), open pores, and fine lines. It can also help in removing tattoos when combined with other treatments.
How effective is microdermabrasion for acne?
While this treatment is beneficial for oily and acne-prone skin, it may not be helpful in treating inflammatory lesions such as cystic acne. Our trained consultant can suggest the right type of treatment for your skin concern.
How many sessions are required to see results?
Many patients notice significant improvements after just one session. We recommend at least 6-10 sessions with 7-14 days interval to experience the full effects of the treatment.
Is microdermabrasion covered by insurance?
Cosmetic treatments are generally not covered by insurance policies. However, some companies make a few exceptions if the treatment is meant to fix surgical scars and pre-cancerous growths so better check with your provider.
Initial consultation
During the consultation, you will be asked about your medical and family history, including the medications you are currently taking. A licensed consultant will analyze your skin concern to come up with the best treatment plan, depending on the severity of the problem areas.
Treatment details
After a thorough cleansing, your therapist will move the handpiece smoothly and steadily across your skin. The longer the abrasive crystals are in contact with your skin, the deeper is the depth of exfoliation. For deep acne scars, more pressure is needed for the treatment to be effective, so you may experience pinpoint bleeding. The whole procedure could take about 20 – 30 minutes. You need to keep your skin hydrated using specialized moisturizers in between sessions.
Side effects and contraindications
The most common side effects reported after a microdermabrasion treatment are erythema (redness), sensitivity, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. However, these side effects are often mild and temporary.
Recovery
Microdermabrasion is a safe and gentle procedure that addresses different types of skin problems. While you can go back to your daily activities right after the procedure, you should protect the treated area for a couple of days, making sure not to disrupt the skin’s healing process. Avoid strong cleansers and facial treatments, as they are more likely to sting or burn during the recovery period. After just one session, your skin will feel smoother, softer, and more radiant looking.

SOME INFORMATION
Both dermabrasion and microdermabrasion are exfoliative techniques that promote skin rejuvenation, but they use different instruments and have distinct executions. In dermabrasion, the epidermis is completely stripped off to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin (papillary and reticular dermis). Also, the skin’s structural proteins are completely remodelled.
Microdermabrasion, on the other hand, only removes the superficial layer of the epidermis to accelerate the natural process of exfoliation. Simply put, dermabrasion is more invasive than microdermabrasion and may have a greater risk of adverse effects and even longer downtime.
